"Vishing" (short for voice phishing) is the newest form of identity theft. Posing as a banking or credit-card representative, the scammer asks you to call a toll-free number to straighten out some mysterious problem with your account. When you phone in, an automated system asks you to punch in, on your dial pad, your account number and other private information that may include your social security number. Voila - you've been vished!
What do you do now? If you receive a phone call or email asking you to do the above, call your bank or credit card company and ask if the communication is for real. If you have already given out your account number, they can tell you what steps to take. You can also learn other precautions at the Federal Trade Commission website.
